Navigating Food Security: Adaptation and Resilience During COVID-19

The impact of COVID-19 was profound not just in the United States but worldwide. The world seemed to stand still, during which schools and churches closed, and other essential services pivoted to provide basic items to frantic shoppers. This article collection is a tribute to those who found innovative ways to provide food to those in need despite a major disruption.

The extensive health and economic impacts of COVID-19 made it even more challenging for low-income households to afford food and other crucial needs. With schools closed, children missed their school breakfast and lunch, and schools pivoted rapidly to make foods available in unique ways. Families who never required food assistance lined up for free food boxes at places they never expected to be. Government and charity food programs were a lifeline during COVID.

This special collection will look at national and international pivots and perseverance of food programs and their recipients during COVID-19 with the current themes:

  • Adaptation and practice of resilience during the pandemic
  • Effect of social assistance on diet diversity and hunger during the pandemic
  • Rural consumer adaptions during the pandemic
  • Innovative food delivery programs during the pandemic
  • Family and community risk factors of families during the pandemic
