Addressing critical environmental and climate challenges for Africa: The importance of geoscience information
Optimizing findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) geoscience information is essential to address critical environmental challenges faced across the continent of Africa. Increased availability of FAIR geoscience information also improves understanding of the critical relationship between climate change and human activity within Africa. The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Ten Action Plan for Africa (TAP for Africa) sets out the challenges for Africa to enable future geoscience education and outreach in social economic transformation, including decarbonisation and delivering more sustainable energy and mineral resources. This thematic article collection for Critical Insights in Climate Change offers an opportunity to synthesise current understanding and discussions from the 'Status of Geoscience Information in Africa' workshop, organised in collaboration with the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf) and IUGS Commission for the Management and Application of Geoscience Information (CGI).
Papers based on Africa are welcome on the themes of:
· Improved understanding of the relationship between climate change and human activity.
· Connections and feedbacks between climate change and the wider Earth System
- The impacts of climatic disruption on nature and society
- Climate change adaptation and mitigation
- Technological and nature-based solutions to climate change
Suggested invited contributions from presentations delivered at 'Status of Geoscience Information in Africa' workshop
