65 Years Since the Launch of the World’s First Successful Meteorological Satellite” Commemorating the Legacy of TIROS-1 (1960–2025)
On April 1, 1960, NASA launched TIROS-1 (Television InfraRed Observation Satellite), marking a groundbreaking moment in the history of Earth observation and weather forecasting. As the first successful meteorological satellite, TIROS-1 opened the door to modern remote sensing and global atmospheric monitoring.
In honor of the 65th anniversary, Remote Sensing Letters is launching a Special Issue dedicated to exploring the technological, scientific, and societal impacts of TIROS-1 and its legacy.
We invite high-quality submissions on topics including, but not limited to:
- Historical analysis of the TIROS-1 mission
- Advances in satellite meteorology since 1960
- Evolution of Earth-observing satellite systems
- Remote sensing techniques in weather and climate science
- Contributions of TIROS-1 to modern atmospheric science
Submission Instructions
Remote Sensing Letters is an international peer-reviewed academic journal (SCIE with a 2023 impact factor 1.4) focusing on the theory, science and technology of remote sensing and novel applications of remotely sensed data.
Submissions must follow the instructions to authors outlined on the Taylor & Francis author guidelines page for Remote Sensing Letters.
Papers should be submitted online at the Remote Sensing Letter's Submission Portal site. New users should first create an account. Please select the special issue name during submission and indicate the paper is submitted to the special issue on “Anniversary of the launch of TIROS-1 ” in the cover letter.
