Advances in Numerical Modelling of Oceanic Fluid Dynamics

Ocean engineering holds significant promise in addressing global energy demands, environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation. Examples include the ocean renewable energy such as wind, solar, wave and tidal power, as well as resilient coastal defence structures. There are urgent needs to develop safe, efficient and resilient ocean-based structures or systems. These, however, are challenged by the harsh sea environments, which cause complex fluid dynamics (e.g., wave breaking, turbulence, wakes, etc.) around ocean structures/devices and induce destructive fluid-structure interaction processes (e.g., highly nonlinear structural responses, erosion of structure foundations, etc.).

Numerical simulation or modelling has become a crucially important tool in analysing oceanic fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction problems, due to the significant developments in aspects like numerical algorithms and models, multi-GPU/CPU parallelization, industry applications, and Artificial Intelligence-enhanced modelling. These developments have facilitated in-depth revelation and reliable prediction of oceanic hydrodynamic loads and structural responses for a broad range of scenarios. Yet, challenges still exist in this area especially for oceanic fluid-structure interaction problems characterized by multi-physics, high nonlinearity and large scale.

In this context, this Article Collection aims to gather the cutting-edge research in numerical modelling of oceanic fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction problems. The topics include, but are not limited to:

  • State-of-the-art simulation techniques based on mesh-free numerical models such as SPH, MPS, DEM and MPM
  • Latest developments of mesh-based numerical algorithms and models
  • Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced and data-driven modelling approaches and applications
  • Numerical investigations of oceanic fluid dynamics problems
  • Applications of numerical simulations in solving emerging and real-world problems

Article Collection Guest Advisors

Prof. Min Luo is a professor at the Ocean College of Zhejiang University. His research concentrates on the developments and applications of advanced CFD models including particle methods for exploring the physics behind wave/current interaction with marine/coastal structures, as well as the developments of AI-fluid dynamics models for fast flow construction and prediction. He is currently an associate editor of Ocean System Engineering and has the experience of guest editing three special issues on computational mechanics and fluid dynamics.

Prof. Songdong Shao is a leading researcher in the meshfree numerical method and other CFD modelling techniques of the fluid. He is listed as World Top 2% Scientist and Elsevier Most-cited Chinese Researcher, and serves as an Associate Editor of Applied Ocean Research (JCR Q1).

Prof. Shiqiang Yan is currently the chair of Computational Mechanics at City, University of London, head of the Research Group for Intelligent Offshore Renewables Energy Systems (INORES). His main research area include the hydrodynamics associated with offshore wind turbines and wave energy converters and development of numerical models for wave-structure interaction. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers in relevant areas and serves as the vice-chair of the international hydrodynamic committee of ISOPE.

Prof. Abbas Khayyer is an associate professor at Kyoto University, Japan. Abbas has been conducting continued research on theoretical and practical applications of particle methods including SPH since 2005. His main research activities have been on theoretical developments of SPH, development of FSI solvers in the context of particle methods and SPH, and practical applications of FSI solvers in ocean or coastal engineering. Abbas has the experience of guest editing three special issues on SPH for Coastal Engineering Journal, Applied Ocean Research and European Journal of Mechanics B/Fluids. He is currently an associate editor of Applied Ocean Research and a specialist editor of Computer Physics Communications.
