Revolutionising mobility: AI and big data-driven modelling and optimisation in transportation
The Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) invites submissions to a Special Issue focused on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data in transportation modelling and optimization.
These technologies are driving transformative advancements, enabling a deeper and more accurate understanding of passengers and freight, systems, and their interactions, as well as innovative solutions for transportation planning and operations. AI and, in particular, machine learning are improving the analysis and design of complex, multimodal transportation systems, uncovering patterns in vast datasets that were previously inaccessible. They support predictive and adaptive systems, addressing critical challenges such as climate change mitigation, disruption resilience, and equitable access. While applied to develop new modelling techniques and optimisation frameworks, they may contribute to shaping smarter, safer, more resilient, and equitable transportation systems to meet local and global challenges in a rapidly evolving world.
We invite submissions of original papers on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Techniques for big data integration, mining, and visualization to support transportation system planning and operations.
- Advanced models for travel demand, traffic flow, freight movement, and energy consumption forecasting.
- Routing, scheduling, fleet management, emission reduction strategies, and dynamic resource allocation in passenger and freight systems.
- Traffic management, public transport and shared mobility optimisation, and integration of automated vehicles into multimodal networks.
- Applications for accident prediction, prevention strategies, proactive safety monitoring systems, accident detection and mitigation.
- Disruption management, emergency response, long-term resilience against natural and human-made disruptions, and predictive analytics for risk management.
This Special Issue is associated with the EWGT2025 conference but welcomes contributions from all researchers, irrespective of conference participation.
