Psychological Insights in Physical Education
Physical education (PE) is pivotal not only for physical health but also for the psychological development and mental health of youth. This Article Collection focuses on psychological advancements and insights related to PE among youth across multiple disciplines, including social psychology, psychodynamics, and cross-cultural psychology, to foster a deeper understanding of both mental and physical well-being and how to enhance teaching and learning for adolescents engaged in physical activities.
Beneficial PE practices can promote resilience, motivation, social well-being, and physical health among youth participants. Nevertheless, PE contexts may also exacerbate or encourage adverse issues and behaviors, such as body image struggles and social comparison. This Article Collection welcomes innovative research and practical approaches that drive more effective and motivating educational practices.
We invite research articles and systematic reviews on various topics including but not limited to:
- motivation in PE across different demographics,
- the influence of social and psychological factors on sports learning,
- the integration of teaching methods in PE to enhance well-being,
- the formation of sustainable healthy exercise habits,
- the validation of instruments for measuring PE effectiveness,
- ethics of psychological methods in sports,
- body image concerns in PE settings,
- relationships between PE educators and their students,
- cultural impacts on PE practices, and
- the subjectivity in psychological evaluations.
We welcome diverse global perspectives on PE, encompassing different institutional, familial, and cultural contexts, highlighting its role in a trans-national framework. Addressing these topics can emphasize physical education as a key tool in the holistic development of young individuals.
