A.I. and Society in China

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (A.I.) technologies is transforming societies, economies, and cultures across the globe. While A.I. promises opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and convenience, it also raises critical questions about socioeconomic, political, and ethical impact, and the broader social implications. This special issue of Chinese Sociological Review (CSR) seeks to explore the interplay between A.I. and society in China, aiming to provide a platform for rigorous scholarly dialogue on these pressing topics.

China ranks among the top countries globally in A.I. investment, model and patent generation, and talent development. At the same time, this rapid advancement coexists with substantial challenges, such as regulation, increasing inequality, and environmental concerns. This unique global position - shaped by distinct political economies, ideologies, and A.I. subjects - presents new challenges and opportunities for sociologists to explore A.I. within its social context and examine its societal consequences that can contribute to the emerging field of the sociology of A.I.

Submission Instructions

CSR invites submissions for a special issue examining the interactions between A.I. and society in China. This issue aims to advance scholarly understanding of how A.I. technologies are shaped and reshaping Chinese society, culture, and institutions while contributing to broader theoretical discussions in sociology. We are also interested in studies that adopt a global and comparative perspective or offer multi-disciplinary approaches.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • A.I. and public perception
  • A.I.'s role in social norm formation and evolution
  • A.I. and social inequalities
  • A.I. and state, bureaucracy, and geopolitics

  • A.I. and labor, work, and organization
  • A.I. and expertise
  • A.I. and environment
  • A.I.'s impact on social networks and interpersonal relationships
  • Social value alignment of A.I.
  • Integration of A.I. in sociological methods and research
