Innovative Approaches and Sustainability: Current Research in Advanced Combustion and Biofuel Technologies

The energy sector is currently experiencing profound transformations in response to the escalating demands for sustainability and environmental stewardship. This metamorphosis compels the development of innovative, efficient, and ecologically responsible methods for both energy production and consumption. Notably, the reduction of fossil fuel consumption and the integration of renewable energy sources are pivotal in the global endeavour to combat climate change. In this context, research in the field of energy sciences holds paramount importance for mitigating carbon footprints, enhancing energy efficiency, and embracing cutting-edge technologies.

In light of these developments, the Petroleum Science and Technology journal aims to highlight the most recent and innovative research in energy science and technology with a special issue titled “Innovative Approaches and Sustainability: Current Research in Advanced Combustion and Biofuel Technologies”. This special issue will encompass a broad spectrum of research topics, including fossil fuels, biofuels, advanced combustion technologies, and sustainable energy solutions. The overarching goal is to confront the intricate challenges faced by the energy sector while simultaneously introducing research that provides sustainable and innovative solutions to the scientific community.

This special issue will feature original and high-quality research articles and review papers that delve into the following thematic areas:

  • Fossil Fuels and Green Technologies: The impact of fossil fuel subsidies and green technology applications on carbon emissions and efforts to achieve net-zero carbon policies.
  • Biofuel Production and Optimization: The production of biodiesel using sources, the modeling and optimization of production processes with the aid of synthesized nanocatalysts.
  • Combustion Kinetics and Advanced Combustion Technologies: The multi-stage combustion kinetics of solid fuels, chemical looping combustion technologies, the role of nanoparticle fuel additives, and combustion mechanisms.
  • Biomass and Thermochemical Conversion: The analysis of flexible gasification-based processes involving the conversion of biogenic waste and residues into biomethane and biochar.
  • Alternative Fuel Additives: The effects of additives, such as aluminum particles, added to diesel and biodiesel fuels on performance and emissions.
  • Engine Performance and Emissions: Experimental investigation of the effects of fuel blends, such as the addition of gasoline to natural gas, gasoline, and RCCI engines, on engine performance and emissions.
  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in low-alcohol diesel and biodiesel blends and the toxic properties of these compounds.
